The annual Rhino Charge event has never been for the light hearted
and some would call it a ‘man’s world’, but this year Amiran was more than
honoured to have sponsored six teams among them a team of only ladies who took
part in the competition. Amiran have for the past years been sponsoring some of
their client, who have the stamina and heart to take part in the Rhino
Charge. This year’s Amiran leant its
support to teams from far and wide including: Oserian (car 5), Luthyflora (car 1), Penta
(car 19), Kisima Farm (car 42) and Afrioganic (car 33
and 48).
Rhino Charge, which was founded by Ken Kuhle and Rally Enthusiast Rob Coombes, is a top notch competition where competitors are required to visit 13 points scattered over approximately 100 square kilometers of rough terrain within a 10 hour period. Competitors are supplied with a 1:50,000 scale map of the venue, co-ordinates of the 13 Control Points and their Start position (at one of the Controls). Each competitor must plot the Control Points on the map and decide his/her route. Navigation is by compass/GPS and the winner is the competitor who visits the most controls in the shortest distance (GPS measured).
This year’s event that was held on 2nd June 2012 in Il Ngwesi, Laikipia District was well attended with men and women fully packed with energy ready to experience a true Kenyan adventure. Excitement and teamwork were clearly spelt out during the whole race with the ladies team from Penta Farm being among the leading cars from the beginning. The team showed all around that ‘what a man can do a woman can also do’.
The enthusiastic team of ladies were truly untouchables for they emerged 8th overall out of 65 other competing teams and won the ‘Coupe des Damas’.
The amount raised totaled to Ksh 84,627,119.33 beating last year’s total of Ksh. 73 million adding Ksh 7.3 million to secure another all time record with all proceeds directed towards the Rhino Charitable Trust. The trust which was founded in the early 1980’s will thus be able to build and maintain an electrical fence that encircles nearly 400km of the Aberdare ecosystem.
Mr. Shay Nir, Head of the Agro-Project’s Division in Amiran was all smiles saying that if he could describe the event in one word it would have to be ‘amazing’. He added that the main goal of the competition is that regardless of whatever position one attained, the greater good was that of conserving Kenya’s natural habitats and manage the use of forests’ products for the benefit of present and future generations.
